Learning to Love the Spotlight: The 30-Day Blog Challenge, Day 19Posted by Jessica Oman
Then for some reason I decided to join a band at age 19. As a singer.
(Yes, there’s video recordings. And a CD.)
Even though I got nervous before every show and sometimes didn’t give my best performance because of my nerves, I just kept on doing it. My love for music compelled me. And even though the band broke up less than two years later, that experience made public speaking possible for me.
Something just clicked. The larger the audience and the brighter the spotlight, the easier it was to let go and sing my heart out in front of hundreds of people.
But that shy little girl is still inside me and I think she’s been keeping me from going all out to attract media attention and land more speaking gigs. Until now!
In today’s 30-day blog challenge question Natalie is asking what platforms we want to use to increase our influence.
Well, I’m learning to love public speaking and that enthusiasm is leading to some really fun gigs – for example I recently did a live web cast with Young Female Entrepreneurs on the 5 myths of business plans, and I’m speaking at MomCEO Academy and CRAVE Vancouver in the fall. I love this stuff – the more I talk about why I love to help entrepreneurs learn to plan for massive business success, the more passionate I become.
However, what I really want is to get in front of a bigger audience. A news network. A national radio show (hear that, CBC?). So far it’s been elusive.
So my platform is speaking gigs and interviews – whether online or offline, on TV or on the radio. Oh, and we’re doing a big event in November too that I can’t wait to tell you about!
I’d love to know how you’re planning to attract media attention with your business – or, if you have any fears or apprehension around doing this, I’d like to you explore that. What’s holding you back from seeking out the spotlight? Share your response in the comments!
