What’s Your Business Motto For 2013?Posted by Nicole
The end of a year is the perfect time to assess and evaluate everything from our personal goals to our progress as entrepreneurs, and to find our way forward with a vision for the year ahead. I’d like to suggest that in addition to your business plan, your mission and vision statements, you come up with your own motto — a personal phrase to encourage you throughout the year.
Last year was my first official year as a business owner, and in the weeks before I decided to make the leap to create my own business (rather than just daydreaming about how great it would be to work for myself, doing what I loved to do), I attended an event that moved and inspired me; it was Hobiyee, the Nisga’a new year. I was invited by a friend who was dancing in the celebration, was captivated by the energy there, and left deciding that somehow 2012 was going to be the Year of Change.
My openness to change (and the sometimes scary unknown) soon began to make change for me. An unexpected event gave me an opportunity to take a leave from my day job and try to make this evening and weekend freelance gig a bigger part of my life. So I leapt. And I learned. And I grew and evolved into a business owner! And now, nearly a year later, I’m ready for a new year with new goals, and a new motto.
Last summer I was invited to participate as a volunteer on the marketing committee for TEDxStanleyPark, which I gladly agreed to. I recently met the event organizers and speakers. Listening to their amazing stories of transforming adversity into strength, of building successful lives (and often very successful businesses) out of incredible hardship reminded me of how much more I could do — just me, one person, with big hopes and dreams. Just like every other entrepreneur. Just like you.
What motto — fellow dreamer, mover and shaker, entrepreneur — will be yours for 2013? Mine is simple, but powerful: No excuses.
I want to extend my warm wishes to you in the year ahead as you continue to grow your business. I’d also like to extend my thanks to those who have read my weekly copywriting, editing, SEO, and web writing tips on the Write Ahead blog this past year!
Happy holidays, and here’s to your ongoing success in 2013!
