Write Ahead in TorontoPosted by Antonia
Wrapping up my trip to Toronto and just sitting down now to reflect, I conclude with an exhausted but exhilarated “WOW”. Even if BC has the highest concentration of small businesses in Canada, Toronto is abuzz with entrepreneurship, creativity and energy. There is a lot of pride and support for startup enterprises and small businesses in Toronto. Entrepreneurs support entrepreneurs through the creation of partnerships and referrals; they also share knowledge and expertise, building a solid community. Even the big educational institutions are keen on helping to foster business growth for locals with their incubators and accelerators, and the government is also noticing that resources for new businesses are in high demand. Provide fertile soil for businesses, and they will grow.
Case in point was the Toronto 2011 SOHOSME Tradeshow. Swaths of people hand-shaking, chatting, tweeting and promoting only fell silent when a guest speaker began to impart his knowledge to the group. There was swag everywhere and the ambiance was vibrant and ambitious. Considering that Toronto is often seen as the “rat race” and corporate headquarters of Canada, this was decidedly a colourful change.
The day after SME2011, was a great 1/2 day event at the Toronto City Hall, called “The Power of Email and Social Media.” The discussion was straightforward and was likely intended for beginners in the area. It was however informative and would be very useful for people who have not yet begun to really dig into the power of the web.
Earlier in the trip, I had the wonderful opportunity to meet one of our newest clients for lunch. As much as we are able to complete business transactions remotely, it’s always a pleasure to meet clients in person. Given that there are certainly opportunities for business expansion in Toronto, there will be many more visits out this way. We need to work on connecting Canada and to redefine “local” to encompass the nation.
Thank you Toronto.
